Character Counter for Social Media

0Characters typed
—Remaining

Every social network and every SEO field has its own character limit — and going over it can cut your message or ad off mid-sentence. This tool shows, in real time, how many characters you have left for the limit you pick.

Type your text, choose a platform from the dropdown, and watch the progress bar: it turns yellow near the limit and red once you go over.

Common limits

  • X (formerly Twitter): 280 characters per post.
  • Instagram: up to 2,200 characters in a caption, but only ~125 show before 'more'.
  • SEO title (Google): around 60 characters before it gets truncated in search results.
  • Meta description: roughly 155–160 characters.

Practical example

You're writing a post for X (Twitter) and want to make sure it fits within 280 characters. Pick the "X / Twitter (280)" limit from the dropdown, type your text, and watch the bar: it turns yellow as you approach the limit and red if you go over.

Frequently asked questions

Do these limits change over time?

Yes, platforms adjust them periodically; we keep the most commonly used figures as a practical reference.

How many characters does an emoji count as?

The count follows the actual characters typed; compound emoji can count as more than one character on some platforms.

Can I use it without picking a platform?

Yes, leave it on 'no limit' to just track the total character count.

Does the counter account for X/Twitter's shortened links?

No — X always counts any link as 23 characters, regardless of its real length. Our count is literal, so a long URL might look like it's using more space than it actually counts for on the platform.

Can I set a custom limit instead of picking from the list?

Right now the tool ships with the most common limits ready to go; for a very specific limit, just watch the total character count and compare it manually to the number you need.
